"For home guitar recording, I want to start with one amp simulator."
When you think that, the first wall you hit is TONEX or AmpliTube 5: which one should you build around?
Both are made by IK Multimedia. The names are similar, and honestly it is confusing.
In this article, I'm ryo, with 13 years of guitar and 8 years of DTM. I'll compare them honestly as someone who owns and uses both.
I won't just list specs. I'll focus on which one you can build around without regrets.
Recommended for
- Anyone who can't quite tell TONEX and AmpliTube 5 apart
- Anyone who wants to pick the one core tool for home recording
- Anyone wondering whether to buy both or just one
Conclusion | If You're Unsure, Build Around AmpliTube 5 and Add TONEX
Let me give you the conclusion first.
The conclusion in two lines
1. If you want range and effects too, make AmpliTube 5 your core. 2. If you want the "air" of real gear in one focused sound, go with TONEX.
Here is the most important point.
These two are not "either/or." You can combine them.
Both come from IK, so you can load a sound you made in TONEX into AmpliTube 5 and use it there.
IK also runs a bundle every year where buying one gets you the other for free (Black Friday, or BF below, is the usual time).
So the "which one?" problem can realistically become "get both," depending on how you buy. I explain when to buy later in this article and in the BF guide.

Black Friday 2026 Guide for Guitarists | TONEX, AmpliTube, UAD and How to Buy Without Regret
To give the conclusion first, the main day of Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27. The first thing a guitarist should aim at is the TONEX MAX + AmpliTube 5 MAX two-in-one bundle. For the past two years in a row, there has been a sale where "buy one and get the other free." Black Friday (BF below) is the time of year when DTM plugins get cheapest. Discounts of 50 to over 80% are not rare. But if you buy everything in sight just because it's cheap, you only add to your pile of unused plugins. This page ...
TONEX and AmpliTube 5 Have Different Philosophies
Before specs, the two differ completely in how they approach making a sound.
TONEX = it "captures (copies)" real gear with AI.
AmpliTube 5 = a studio where you freely "build" with amps, cabinets and effects.
TONEX | Take a "Snapshot" of Real Gear
TONEX uses its own AI modeling technology called AIMM™.
A signal is sent through a real amp or pedal, and the AI learns the character and response of the sound as a whole. The result is saved as a "Tone Model."
Think of it as taking a photo of a sound you love, exactly as it is at that moment.
TONEX mainly covers drive, amps and cabinets. It cannot reproduce time and modulation effects such as delay, reverb and chorus. Keep that in mind.
AmpliTube 5 | Line Up Parts and "Build" Your Sound
AmpliTube 5, on the other hand, is a studio inside your screen.
You can rearrange pedals, amps, cabinets, mics and rack gear freely, just like the real thing.
With VIR™ technology, you can even adjust the mic position in 3D. Move it closer for more core, or toward the center for a brighter tone, just as in a real recording session.
Sound Differences | My Honest Impressions After Playing Both
More than specs, you probably want to know how they actually sound.
These are my own personal impressions after playing both for years.
The TONEX Sound | A Different Level of "Air"
In my own words, TONEX's biggest strength is "air."
It keeps the lifelike feel of the air moving between the mic and the amp when real gear is recorded.
It shows its real value especially in clean to crunch tones. It responds realistically to how hard you pick, so it feels great to play.
Here is my demo video comparing clean tones (the comparison is with Logic's built-in amp, but I think the air of the TONEX side comes through).
Here is a distortion comparison demo. You can hear that it holds up with high gain as well.
The AmpliTube 5 Sound | A "Living" Feel When You Play
AmpliTube 5 has a very wide range.
From British crunch to American clean to modern high gain, this one tool covers most of it.
The grain of the distortion changes with how hard you pick, and it opens up to clean when you roll back the guitar's volume. That "living" feel shows how carefully it is built.
MAX v2 includes many officially licensed amps from Fender, Mesa/Boogie, Orange and others. Being able to pick "that classic amp" by name is reassuring.
Features and Expandability Compared by Specs
Here are the main differences in a table. On a phone, you can scroll it sideways.
| Item | TONEX MAX | AmpliTube 5 MAX v2 |
| Approach | AI capture of real gear | Build with amps, cabinets and effects |
| Included models | 1,000 Tone Models | About 435 models (111 amps / 105 cabinets) |
| Effects | Mostly drive, EQ and the like (no time or modulation effects) |
Full set, including delay and reverb |
| Routing | Simple (one rig) | Multiple amps and free signal order |
| Cabinet / mic | Cabinet is baked into the capture (mic position is basically fixed) |
3D mic placement with VIR™ |
| Capture your own gear | Yes, you can capture your own gear | No (but you can load TONEX sounds) |
| Sound character | Focused, airy sound | Versatile all-rounder |
Don't Choose by the Number of Models Alone
On numbers alone, TONEX's 1,000 looks appealing.
But in TONEX, one rig equals one model. AmpliTube lets you combine parts into endless variations, so a simple count comparison doesn't mean much.
AmpliTube Wins Clearly on Effects and Routing
This is where the gap is obvious.
For music like post-rock, where you build a "wall" of sound with delay and reverb, TONEX alone isn't enough.
AmpliTube 5 can build even the time-based effects in one plugin, so your home-recording workflow stays in one place.
If you want time-based effects with TONEX, the usual solutions are your DAW's reverb, or loading TONEX sounds inside AmpliTube.
Who TONEX Is For
Choose TONEX if you...
- Put the "air" and lifelike feel of real gear first
- Play a lot of clean to crunch tones
- Want to capture and use the amps you own
- Prefer simple sound design and don't want to hesitate
TONEX is good at getting the sound you want right away.
It suits people who would rather pick a good sound and start playing than keep rearranging things.
I cover TONEX in more detail in a separate review.

AmpliTube 5 MAX v2 in Three Lines AmpliTube 5 MAX v2 is the top edition of the guitar/bass amp simulator. It is a plugin IK Multimedia has developed for more than 20 years. Conclusion | Which Should a Guitarist Build Around?
Here is my conclusion once more.
step
1First, make AmpliTube 5 your core. Its range makes it the base for home recording
step
2Then add TONEX for the sounds where you want that "air"
If you truly can pick only one, I'd say AmpliTube 5 for its versatility.
If your goal is sharp and specific, such as wanting to enjoy the feel of real gear above all, then it's TONEX.
Price and Timing | Aim for "Buy One, Get One Free"
TONEX MAX and AmpliTube 5 MAX v2 are both IK's top-tier editions.
And most years, IK runs a bundle where buying one gets you the other for free (especially on BF, Black Friday).
For the past two years, the pattern was a big discount on getting both TONEX MAX and AmpliTube 5 MAX, extended into the new year (this is not a confirmed deal for this year).
So if you can't decide which to build around, the best-value route is to aim for a two-in-one bundle on BF.
I cover the price history and how to buy in the complete BF guide.

Amp Simulator Basics | Signal Chain Order and How to Think About Gain
"With an amp simulator, what do I actually connect to what?" When you start recording guitar in DTM, this is the first question you run into. There are lots of knobs, and the order of effects isn't clear either. Raise the gain and the sound gets crushed, lower it and it lacks punch. This article explains amp simulators. I'll break down the basic signal chain order and how to think about gain from the point of view of a home-recording guitarist. I've left out difficult theory as much as possible. Learn this shape first, and you can apply it from ...
