MODO DRUM vs BFD3 | Which Suits Band Home Recording? A Comparison from an Owner of Both

What you'll learn in this article

  • The fundamental difference in how MODO DRUM and BFD3 make sound
  • A practical comparison of sound quality, weight and customization for band home recording
  • Which has the edge for 90s alternative and grunge-style sound
  • Which to choose by genre and PC specs
I can't decide between MODO DRUM and BFD3. I want to hear the honest opinion of someone who has both.

I'm ryo, 13 years of guitar and 8 years of DTM. I've used both for years. To give the conclusion first, both are excellent, but what they're good at is completely different. Today I'll compare the differences honestly.

For those who only want the conclusion first

  • If you put light operation and freedom in sound design first, MODO DRUM
  • If you put the air of live drums and an alternative/grunge-leaning texture first, BFD3
  • If you're unsure, deciding by PC specs and genre is the way that doesn't fail

Basic Spec Comparison of MODO DRUM and BFD3

First, let me sort out the differences in the basic specs.

Item MODO DRUM BFD3
Developer IK Multimedia BFD (now inMusic)
Sound generation Physical modeling (real-time calculation) Recorded sampling
Number of kits 13 kits 7 core kits (expanded to 51 kits and 60 presets in BFD3.5)
Free space needed Official minimum requirement is 20 GB or more About 55 GB (about 100 GB of free space needed during installation)
CPU load Higher (because of real-time calculation) Relatively low
MIDI patterns 1,400+ built in Includes groove patterns (real performance data)
List price Check needed (large discounts during sales) $199 (around $39 during sales)

BFD3.5 lists "51 kits," but this is a set of combinations and variations of the 7 core drum sets that were actually recorded. It is not that there are 51 patterns on top of the 7 sets recorded from scratch, so be careful not to misunderstand before you buy.

Looking at the numbers alone, BFD3 seems bigger in size and heavier. That's indeed true, but the way each generates sound differs, so it isn't a simple matter of better or worse. Let's look at them one by one.

A Thorough Comparison of Sound Quality and Live Texture

The direction of the sound is the biggest dividing line between these two sources.

The Sound of MODO DRUM | A "Designed" Sound

MODO DRUM calculates the resonance of the drums through physical modeling.

Depending on the strength of each hit, a slightly different waveform is generated each time.

ryo
ryo
Its strength is that the "machine-gun effect," where a sound repeats uniformly even when you hit repeatedly at the same velocity, is less likely. Also, the way the snare subtly resonates when you hit the kick feels natural too, which I think is unique to physical modeling.

The Sound of BFD3 | A "Chosen" Sound

BFD3 is based on samples recorded from real drums.

It has up to 80 velocity layers, with fine changes in texture from soft to hard hits recorded.

So neither is prone to the "machine-gun effect"?

Right. But the reasons differ. MODO DRUM remakes the sound each time through calculation. BFD3 picks the nearest sound from a huge number of layers. Both end up with a natural groove, but for the texture of air, BFD3 has a "recorded-material realism."

Below is a video where I played the same phrase on MODO DRUM and BFD3 and compared them.

MODO DRUM is a hybrid: kick, snare and toms are physically modeled, and cymbals are sampled. This design is because the complex overtones of metal are hard to model.

Comparing Lightness and PC Load

For a home-recording guitarist, PC load matters more than you'd think.

Even "load" has different natures. MODO DRUM's is CPU load from real-time calculation, and BFD3's is mainly disk I/O and memory load from loading large samples. Which feels heavier depends on your PC configuration (CPU-focused or SSD-speed-focused).

Item MODO DRUM BFD3
Startup speed Fast (no sample loading) Somewhat slow (loading a library of over 55 GB)
CPU load Higher (real-time calculation) Relatively low
SSD usage Official minimum requirement 20 GB or more 55 GB or more (about 100 GB of free space needed during installation)
ryo
ryo
In an environment with little internal SSD, such as a MacBook, this difference is quite big. I often work on several Logic Pro projects in parallel, so honestly MODO DRUM's lightness helps.
Conversely, MODO DRUM's CPU load is higher, right?
Reader
Reader
ryo
ryo
Right. The official system requirements list Core i5 (AVX-capable) or better as the minimum, and with a PC near that minimum, MODO DRUM's calculation load can be noticeable. In that case, I recommend a workflow that uses track freezing and bouncing.

Comparing Customization | Build Freely, or Choose from Plenty

MODO DRUM play style and strike position parameter settings screen.

MODO DRUM Customization

You can design the sound from scratch with parameters, down to shell material and size, head tension, strike position and stick material.

Here is a video that plays and compares the sound of all 13 kits. Use it as a reference when looking for a kit that fits your mix.

BFD3 Customization

BFD3 is the type where you output each part separately with multi-out and apply EQ and compression individually in your DAW to build the texture.

It also has a feature called tom resonance modeling, which recreates the behavior of an adjacent drum resonating.

This is a video that plays through BFD3's presets. You can see the range of live-drum texture.

The image is: "if you want to design the sound," MODO DRUM; "if you want to polish a recorded live drum sound in your own mix," BFD3. Both have a lot of freedom, but the directions are exactly opposite.

By Band Genre | Which Fits

BFD3 preset 'BFD3 90s Seattle Rock 109bpm PG' shown. Contains 90s Seattle rock-style sound.

Which fits my band's genre?

I've been making 90s alternative and grunge-style sound for years. From that experience, I use BFD3 when I want a rough air, and MODO DRUM when I want a tight, modern texture.
Musical style Recommended source
Rock, alternative, grunge, Americana BFD3
Metal, modern rock, pop MODO DRUM
You want a flat sound that serves as a mixing reference MODO DRUM (Reference kit)
You want to use a rough texture MODO DRUM (Grungy kit) / BFD3

With either source, the impression changes a lot depending on how you choose the kit. Don't decide instantly by genre; it's best to audition the preset kits first and then decide.

Comparing Usability in Logic Pro

Both support multi-out (separate outputs) in Logic Pro.

ryo
ryo
With MODO DRUM, you choose the multi-output instance in the Instrument slot and add Aux channel strips in the Mixer. BFD3 likewise lets you assign individual outputs from the Outputs tab. The steps are almost the same, but BFD3's UI has more information, so you might get a little lost at first.
Are both difficult for beginners at programming?

ryo
Using the preset MIDI patterns, both are easy. MODO DRUM lets you choose from over 1,400 patterns, and BFD3 from groove patterns played by real drummers. You almost never have to program from scratch.

Comparing Price and Sale Trends

Prices change with exchange rates and the timing at each store. Always check the current price before you buy.

BFD3 has a list price of $199, and tends to drop to around $39 to $50 during sales.

*Plugin Boutique list prices (shown in yen on its Japan store) were checked in October 2026 and are consistent with the list prices above. Sale prices are past results and change.

MODO DRUM is a product in IK Multimedia's ecosystem, so bundle deals with TONEX MAX and AmpliTube 5 MAX sometimes appear.

ryo
ryo
For both, Plugin Boutique's big quarterly sales make them much cheaper. If you aren't in a hurry, it's wise to wait for a sale. Around Black Friday is an especially good target.

Conclusion | Which Would an Owner of Both Choose?

MODO DRUM is for you if you...

  • Want to save storage space
  • Want to design the drum sound yourself from scratch
  • Want projects to start up faster
  • Want to unify with IK Multimedia's ecosystem (TONEX, AmpliTube)
  • Want to make metal, modern rock or pop-leaning sound

BFD3 is for you if you...

  • Put the realistic air of live drums first
  • Want to make rock, alternative, grunge or Americana sound
  • Want to output separately and build the mix yourself
  • Want to keep CPU load down (unsure about your PC specs)
In the end, if I buy only one, which is better?

If you're a programming beginner who wants to use something simple and light, MODO DRUM. If you put a realistic, band-like air first, BFD3. I use both, but honestly either one alone is enough for home-recorded drums. It's fine to decide by the direction of the sound.

Summary of this article

  • MODO DRUM is physical modeling, BFD3 is recorded sampling. They differ fundamentally in how sound is made
  • Storage size and CPU load are a trade-off. MODO DRUM is light on storage, BFD3 is light on CPU
  • By genre, metal and pop lean MODO DRUM, alternative and grunge lean BFD3
  • Both support multi-out in Logic Pro and are easy for programming beginners
  • The two are complementary rather than competing. If your budget allows, it's worth owning both
